She had a hard childhood being discriminated as a Latino-American lesbian, and so was treated as an outcast.[1] When she was fourteen she had her first crush on a girl, Elisa Wilkey, and so, on Valentine's Day, she wrote her a card and asked her to the dance, however, Elisa said no and also showed the card to her parents, who then called the Sawyers - outing Maggie. This led to a big fight between Maggie and her parents, so her dad kicked her out of the house. She then lived with her aunt for three years.[2]

During some point in her life, she was in a serious relationship with Emily, and they dated for five years.
