"I know myself. I'm a ripe mix of guilt and torment."
—John Constantine[src]

John Constantine (May 10, 1982[1] - 1925; resurrected 1925), nicknamed El Diablo by the gangsters of Mexico City,[2] is an exorcist, demonologist, and warlock, self-styled as "master of the dark arts".[3] John is the son of the late Tommy Constantine and the late Mary Anne, the brother of an unnamed woman, and a descendant of Konstentyn. He is also the ex-lover/good friend of Anne Marie Flynn, Sara Lance, and Gary Green, as well as the ex-boyfriend of Desmond, the late Natalie Logue, and Zari Tarazi. Having been raised by an abusive father since John's mother died in childbirth, he grew up highly cynical and cunning, soon developing an interest in the dark arts.

When John was 15 years old, he was introduced into the occult world by Anne Marie. He learned various spells and became an exorcist with the hopes of one day using his powers to resurrect his mother. John became a figure of respect among the dabblers of magic and began leading the Newcastle Crew.

One night, John attempted an exorcism on a young girl named Astra Logue by summoning the demon Nergal, only for the demon to kill Astra and drag her soul to Hell, damning her for eternity, an action which damned John's soul for Hell upon death. Overwhelmed with guilt, he initially retired but after hearing of the Rising Darkness from the angel Manny, John returned to face this threat, with Manny giving him hope that, should he succeed, John's soul may be spared eternal damnation. While hunting a hunger demon, which he suspected may be connected to the Rising Darkness, John briefly operated under the alias Lee Drygas.[4]

After the Legends allowed Mallus to escape his prison in order to destroy the demon, it opened a door to other evils. Joined by Gary of the Time Bureau, John confronted the Legends about their latest screw-up. Five months later, he would assist the Legends in capturing the escaped magical "fugitives", sending them to Hell. He initially refused to join the team, but after being pursued by a demon named Neron in 2018, John agreed to move into the Waverider, though still insisted that he's "not a bloody Legend".

While helping the Legends return the Encores to Hell, John nearly had his life cut short by a grown-up Astra, who sped up the 10 years of lung cancer he would accumulate. However, he got his life back by promising her to find the Loom of Fate and make Charlie alter the Logue family's fates. When the Legends had to destroy the Loom to end Loomworld, John was unable to cure his future cancer, though Astra came to accept her mother's passing and returned his soul token. He also started a relationship with fellow Legend Zari.

Following an encounter with Aleister Crowley, John lost his powers and became reliant on the Scarlet Lady. Eventually, wanting to reclaim his original magic, he betrayed the Legends and teamed up with Bishop to find the Fountain of Imperium, but was killed in the process. In an attempt to return to the land of the living, John used his token to sell his soul to a demon, becoming damned again. John then chose to end his relationship with Zari and leave the Legends to walk his own path alone once more, using a time stone to return to 2021.

Biography

Early life

John Constantine was born in Liverpool, England[1] on 10 May 1982, as the only son of Tommy Constantine and Mary Anne. His mother died giving birth to him, causing his father to develop a deep resentment towards John, whom he derisively referred to as "killer" his whole life. Whenever Tommy came home from drinking, which John stated was "every night", he would physically abuse his son, reminding him that Mary Anne died because of him. Also, to punish John, Tommy would put out cigarettes by burning them on his arms.[5][6]

John had an older sister, although she eventually abandoned him for unknown reasons.[5]

During his childhood, John met and befriended a girl named Natalie. The two would play together while wearing masks and telling stories about the mythical Loom of Fate, and how they would use it.[7]

As a teenager, John formed the band Mucous Membrane with Bernie Reed. The main goal was desire to gain more attention from girls, but they only managed to release one album.[8] When he was 15 years old, John met a girl named Anne Marie Flynn, who introduced him into the occult world. The two also became lovers for a time.[9] John then began reading every book he could find on the occult, learning how to conjure dead beings in the hopes of one day conjuring his mother.[5]

At some point in John's life, he met and became friends with both Chas Chandler[10] and Esrin Fortuna, the latter of whom he eventually came to owe a substantial sum of money to.[11]

In adulthood, John's friendship with Natalie developed into a romance. However, they broke up when he chose practicing magic over their relationship.[7]

Protection spell

The Soul separating spell.

John and Chas spent their time in one of the bars getting drunk in the process. When John decided to go out with a girl he met, he asked his friend to pay the bill for him again. At the same time, John cast a protective spell on Chas, fearing that he might do something to himself by returning to his family. Before leaving, Chas wanted to listen to a song by a certain band that ended tragically. The pyrotechnic effects set off a fire that occupied an entire building. The man began to help people evacuate, but did not manage to save all of them and himself.

However, Chas woke up in the hospital with his family. After leaving the facility, he met with John, trying to understand the whole incident. He showed him the newspaper of the 47 people who died in the fire, declaring himself a victim - the 48th. It turned out that the spell John cast on Chas caused his body to swallow up all the dead souls. It was because of this that Chas's relationship with his family deteriorated and his wife divorced him. Chas followed John's advice and, unable to live normally with the souls of others, decided to fight evil alongside his friend in order to repay the gift and use it in a good way.[10]

John once had a brutal encounter with Fennel and a sorcerer named Felix Faust. He survived, but left Faust with a grudge against him.[10] John also became bitter enemies with voodoo priest Papa Midnite after several nefarious dealings.[8] At one point, he came to learn of Damien Darhk, a practitioner of dark magic who was the leader of H.I.V.E.. John grew to fear Darhk so much he considered leaving whatever city the latter sought to destroy as a preferable option to facing him.[12] John once put Beebo under a spell that made the toy sentient. Apparently, Beebo told him things that "will make your toes curl".[3] Over the course of his adventures, John found the Grim Reaper in person and stole his sickle for unknown reasons.[13] He also met a "Swamp Thing" in Maine.[14]

Visit to Lian Yu

In 2010, Seeking an artifact called the Orb of Horus, an ancient spell book, John traveled to Lian Yu to retrieve it, but was caught by Baron Reiter's men and brutally interrogated. Conklin interrupted the interrogation to tell Reiter of an A.R.G.U.S. communications device he found and accused newcomer Oliver Queen of being a spy. Reiter presented Oliver with a map John possessed and after confirming his knowledge of their locations, John performed a spell to free himself from his handcuffs and held Oliver at gunpoint and used him as leverage to escape Reiter's compound. He had Oliver forcibly take him to the area he sought and performed a spell to uncover the hidden passageway, much to Oliver's shock.

Once inside, they explored the cave where John explained that there are areas of the world as old as it including Lian Yu, possessing things corrupt men aren't supposed to have such as Reiter. John eventually found what he sought and retrieved it but set off a trap which Oliver saves him from being killed by, insisting he's not one of Reiter's men. After exiting the cave John thanked Oliver for saving his life and broke off the crystal from the rod to give to Reiter, as the rod itself is what contains the magic. John also warned Oliver about Reiter, insisting his narcotics aren't his only interest for being on the island. As insurance, John also used the rod to transfer a spell on his arm onto Oliver's torso, insisted he'd know what to do when the time came and on Oliver's request, John punched him out cold as part of his "escape" and left on his boat, but the two would keep in contact.[12]

Incident at Newcastle

In 2011, Constantine crossed over to Earth-666 and made a deal with Lucifer Morningstar involving his friend Maze. Afterwards, Lucifer owed Constantine a favor.[15] At some point between 2012 and 2014, John stopped the Monkey King from eviscerating an entire family and killed him with the help of Chas.[10]

Young Astra Logue

While at Newcastle, John accidentally damned Astra's soul to Hell trying to extort the demon Nergal into fighting another demon for him.

In 2014, Natalie, was killed by a drunk driver. John and his friends, Anne Marie Flynn, Gary Lester, Ritchie Simpson, Judith, and Chas Chandler, attempted to resurrect her. While Natalie was successfully resurrected, the ritual was botched and a demon possessed Natalie's daughter, Astra.[7] John then decided to summon a more powerful demon named Nergal and extort him into dragging the lesser demon back to Hell, but unfortunately, Nergal was able to seize Astra and violently pulled her into Hell in front of everyone, damning her for eternity. This action also damned John's soul for Hell upon his eventual death.[5] Natalie then committed suicide out of guilt.[7]

This action severally traumatized John and he placed himself in Ravenscar Psychiatric Facility for the Mentally Deranged out of guilt. The rest of the crew also came to resent John, some more than others. Because of his actions and what happened to Astra, the group was haunted for the rest of their lives.[5]

John Constantine first time meet Manny

John meets Manny for the first time.

A few months after his voluntary internment, John discovered a possessed woman writing something on a wall. After exorcizing the woman, John saw that she wrote the words "Liv Die". Remembering his promise to his friend, Jasper Winters, John left the hospital and went to the United States. There he met Liv Aberdine, the daughter of his friend who (like her father) could see the true nature of supernatural things when in contact with an amulet. They soon learned that the demon Furcifer pursued and wanted to kill her. John decided to ask the help of Ritchie to defeat the demon. The three then prepared a trap for the demon.

As John began to recite an incantation to send the demon back to hell, Astra appeared. Furcifer then made an offer to John: if John freed him then Furcifer would release Astra's soul from Hell. As John was about to free Furcifer, Liv discovered that it was not Astra, but a demon disguised as her. Learning this, John performed an exorcism and sent the demons back to Hell. Liv then left John's company to go and live with a friend, but not before performing a scrying ritual on the map of the United States, leaving lots of blood on the sources of the strengthened dark magic. Meanwhile, John made the decision to help Manny to discover the nature of the thing that was causing the supernatural world to go wild. He and Chas Chandler decided to tackle on the country's supernatural problems, hoping to save John's soul along the way.[5]

Hard-traveling exorcists

Traveling to the town of Heddwich without his partner (Chas had to stay out of the State of Pennsylvania due to an incident involving a Succubus and a trainwreck), John ended up meeting Zed Martin, who's been seeing Constantine in her dreams, along with visions of demons. Although he didn't trust Zed at first, her specific skills and a talent for clairvoyance magic made her an asset to John. Ditching Zed at the hotel, Constantine traveled to the wake ceremony in remembrance of late Lannis Cadogan with a Hearty Cuisine Chicken Dinner as a gift, using the situation to snoop around the house and look for clues.

John encountered Lannis Cadogan's wife, who told him her sob story over marrying a deadbeat husband who tried to woo her as a "captain of industry", and then tried to seduce John. When he didn't respond to her advances, the widow shouted at him and made a scene in front of the guests, publicly showing Constantine out of her house. Having to fight off the mining company's goons, John left the premises, but not before letting Thad Bowman, the boss of NorPenn Mining Company know that he uncovered the secret behind the unnatural happenings at the mine. At first, John suspected the local disenfranchised preacher to be the one who enchanted the Coblynau to do dark deeds, but later investigation along with Zed convinced him that the man was innocent.

Venturing into the mines while following Thad Bowman and his son, John and Zed encountered the Coblynau trying to attack the two men, but John was able to break the dark spell and remind the spirit of its good nature, though not before it killed the father. Finally figuring it out, John came back to Lannis Cadogan's widow, revealing his suspicions about her use of Gypsy black magic. She tried to sic Coblynau on Constantine but forgot the fact that Coblynau is spirits of dead miners, which allowed John to summon her own husband as one, to take its revenge on the one who killed him. The Coblynau-turned Lannis appeared out of the ground and dragged his wife under it together with him.[1]

John was learning a new spell at the mill when he overheard Zed and Chas talking. He decided to get dressed and after a while of conversation they looked at the bloody map that showed them Chicago. As it turned out, John found out about Bernie's death, which was not normal. As Zed moved away from the men, Constantine asked Chas to check her out, as she is smart but still doesn't trust her. Soon after that, John and Martin traveled to Chicago, leaving Chandler in Atlanta. They broke into the morgue, where an exorcist, using the hand of glory, temporarily resurrected the dead body of a deceased friend, who gave Constantine the last of his strength, saying that a vinyl voice had done so to him, and mentioned "Moonrise."

Following that, the two realized that their next stop should be the old Moonrise Records where Bernie used to work. According to the information found, its owner, Marcus Mooney, was still alive, so they decided to visit him. Thereby they found themselves on the Devonshire nursing ward, where they forced the nurse into the patient's room with an enchanted card. Zed and John started a conversation with Marcus, who told them the story of Willie Cole, selling the Devil's soul, and the vinyl he had hidden. He also mentioned that a detective had visited him some time ago, who asked about the same thing, and that he had read the name "Fell" on the sheet. Suddenly, Marcus had a seizure, and when they all ran out to call the nurse, time stood still, which Constantine was the only one who didn't notice. Manny stood over the bed of the dying producer and took his soul. Soon after, Zed and John broke into the Fell's house. The exorcist believed that a musician, Ian Fell, was behind everything, whom he attacked and accused of murdering Bernie.

After a while, an armed Jasmine appeared, who revealed that she was connected with the whole mess. She talked about a contract signed with a certain Anton, which was to be used as a rescue for her husband who died 20 years ago of cancer. Everything worked out, but now the same soul trader has promised her that he will return her soul in exchange for the "devil's plate". Constantine decided to visit Anton, encountering Papa Midnite, whose people had stunned the exorcist. When he awoke, he was tied to a metal gate, and the enemy injected him with an anticoagulant, then cut his arm open. He decided that he would follow his lead, but did not intend to kill him, and would return to him if the hints were incorrect. Soon after, Zed found John at the dump, where she chased away the stranger who was trying to kill him.

After Chandler's arrival, the three of them followed the trail of vinyl victims, and even more. They got a chance to reflect the album only thanks to the vision of Martin, which saw a white tiger, thus pointing to the local radio station. As Zed and Chas tried to cut off the transmit signal, John decided to fight the main problem by getting inside with the headphones. These, however, did not quite work, but fortunately for him, Midnite burst into the building, destroying the speakers and demanding a CD from his people. However, they did not intend to do it, and this opportunity was used by Constantine, who sent the vinyl to Hell with a spell, which angered the criminal. However, he did not have time to take revenge as the exorcist escaped. Immediately after that, the team returned for Anton, whom she had brought to the Fell's house. She forced him to eat the contract, which was tantamount to undoing his terms and restoring Jasmine's health and bringing back Ian's illness. After that, the team returned to Atlanta, where they found a moment to rest.[8]

John Constantine and Zed Martin in park

John and Zed in the park.

John spent the day with Zed in the park, trying to show her that her senses were extremely vulnerable to external stimuli. Their conversation about drugs was interrupted by Manny, who stopped time to talk to Constantine about the recruit. He wanted to know if the girl was aware of the threat she was facing and if she could handle it all. After Manny disappeared, John decided to return with Martin to the mill, where the exorcist noticed a sloppy break-in. He knew, however, that the criminal had no chance to escape thanks to Jasper's security. When they entered, they found John's old friend Gary Lester in an anti-gravity trap. Gary explained why he came to Atlanta to stay with Constantine. The reason was his addiction caused by Astra's death, which caused him to party so much that he ended up in Sudan. When he came to his senses, on one of the streets he met a boy, Okot, in whose body a demon was hidden. Gary decided to drive him out, which he succeeded, and then locked him in a jar that he tried to transport to John.

The Mist

At the airport, however, there was a problem whereby the demon broke free and started killing. Constantine left Zed with Lester and decided to investigate who he was dealing with. When John returned, he explained that they were battling the hunger demon that was using the host, and when it weakened, he would use another. Martin handed the exorcist drawings of the boy she had seen through visions after touching Lester, and Constantine decided to visit the shaman. To this end, he contacted a friend, Nommo, who promised to help him. With the help of special drugs, he showed him what he knows with his eyes. He drew him a story of how the shaman of a village, Samir, chose a young boy to trap a demon in him and save the village from starvation. He noted that the symbols on his body must be precisely painted with a special tool that he can find in the museum. When John returned, after a short conversation with Martin, he realized where his friend had gone.[4]

He found it not long after that with two drug dealers who were beating Gary. The exorcist offered them a drug from Nommo in exchange for the freedom of a friend with whom he immediately went to the bar to talk frankly. Seeing on TV that the demon stopped at the cinema, they decided to defeat the beast together. On the way, however, they were forced to break into the museum and divert attention to get the shaman's blade. At one point, time stopped Manny, who asked John if he really knew what he was doing. After Gary got the item he needed, they went to the movies together, stealing two ID cards on the way. There, they saw a demon in the body of a man eating popcorn.

John sacrifices Gary to capture the demon

It was then that Gary realized why he was alone with John here - a demon cannot be trapped in any vessel but in another human. Lester thought it over and decided it might be the best death of his life, the best end to his miserable life - he finally felt needed. In the end, he agreed, so Constantine proceeded to cast the spell. As soon as the demon chose Gary as its next host, John used the blade to engrave protective symbols on his face. Immediately after that, he took him to the mill, where he found Zed. The girl was angry at the exorcist that he had tricked a friend who only wanted to be like him. He only shouted that Gary knew what he was writing for and had Martin set up a room at the end of the long corridor. After taking Lester there, John tied his screaming friend to the bed and sat next to him, holding his hand. It was difficult for him, and after a while Manny showed up. This time he did not stop time, but knelt in front of the bed and stared at the suffering man.

John was trying to repair one of the artifacts while Zed had been trying to combine her visions with the bloody map for more than two hours. While Chas was preparing a meal, Martin's visions unexpectedly returned. She saw a little boy who was taught by his mother to shoot a pistol. Thus, Zed obtained a kind of connection with the map, which John was counting on, and they could go to the next place, which was New Orleans. After arriving, the three were the first to go to the mysterious alley where something paranormal happened last night. They found nothing suspicious, but did meet Detective Corrigan who was skeptical of "a bunch of occult freaks." But he knew what had happened in this place lately was not normal, and he took the business card from Constantine. Soon after, Zed and John checked into the hotel where the exorcist revealed that he was furious that he didn't know anything about Martin. The latter revealed that she did not like wine and headed towards the elevator. When the door opened, the empath saw the street and a broken tree, and then a car racing towards her. Constantine quickly realized that they were currently dealing with two phenomena, so he decided to notify

the police of the accident. In the morning, John and Chas went to the place from the vision, where they learned about the death of the driver who had asked about Philip Carlberg's hitchhiker before his death. After a while, Corrigan himself arrived, arresting Constantine, suspecting him of being involved in the accident. While his friend was away, Chandler made sure that no one in the alley was hurt. Constantine was being questioned by Jim at the police station. The detective realized that the exorcist was right and presented him with the files of a model who committed suicide 5 years ago and a boy who died in an accident 3 years ago. John decided it would be good to meet the victims' relatives, as they might know something. He himself went to see Tammy Fraser, a former model linked to Misaki's suicide, while Zed contacted the hitchhiker's grandmother. They both revealed that they had recently contacted a certain Papa Midnite, whom Constantine decided to visit. When he found his whereabouts, he interrupted one of his rites and tried to explain what he was doing. The latter, however, angry with him because of the last meeting, put him to sleep and ordered him to be hidden in the trunk.[16]

Papa Midnite contacted his deceased sister in Hell, asking her if Constantine was right. Hearing a positive response, he visited Madeline Devereaux, where he also met her late husband, who was in fact a life-draining spirit. Therefore, he decided to accept John's offer and work with him, but John in return wanted to contact Hell with the help of his sister, after executing the plan. Soon after, Papa and John harvested the bodies of the summoned spirits to perform a ritual that sent them back to where they had come from. Immediately after that, they tried a ritual that didn't work. The men started arguing, then realized what was blocking them. So they asked Corrigan to bring their relatives dead. During this time, both Zed and Chas took care of the remaining ghosts. When the detective was found, John explained that in order for everything to succeed, loved ones must forgive the dead and come to terms with their death. Immediately after that, they resumed the ritual, which this time brought the intended results, getting rid of the ghosts. Shortly thereafter, John was drinking whiskey with Papa, and their truce was to end after the drink. Constnatine asked Midnite to ask the sister about the Coming Darkness, but the sister only revealed that no matter how much heart John puts into the fight, he would still lose, because someone close to him was involved.

John, after an intoxicating night with Nora, was awakened by her, who in a hurry and fear began to drive the man out of the house. She informed him that her boyfriend was coming soon and needed to go quickly, then she gave him the clothes and let him out the window. After this incident, Constantine went to the mill, where he prepared himself breakfast. Chas, in Zed's absence, decided to help John in the next steps, despite his reluctance, and traveled to Birmingham to investigate the strange murder of the entire family. They drove to the house of the dead, where Constantine decided to check what had happened there, when Chandler was supposed to protect the rear.

During the investigation, Manny appeared who once again mentioned that the forces of darkness are growing in power and will be even more difficult to overcome. John tried to force him to say what had happened in the house, but he could not do so, explaining that after giving free will to humans, angels were forbidden to interfere in events. The exorcist investigated the matter further, discovering that the girl who survived the attack was controlled by an entity inhabiting her body. Meanwhile, in another house in the same town, Henry's parents were awakened by their son's scream, fearing that someone was in his room. Daryl and his wife checked the room to prove to him that he was safe, then returned to each other. The young man, however, was still stressed when he suddenly noticed a strange posture behind the curtain. He cried out in fear, and as his parents ran into the room, he showed calm, informing them that everything would be fine from now on.

At the same time, in one of the bars, John met his friend Becca Schultz, who as a lawyer consulted the sources and obtained the documents for the exorcist regarding the last unexplained death of the whole family, except for the child. The man, however, could not come close to the victims of similar incidents, but he had the opportunity to contact the first of them, a certain Marcello Panneti, who was currently in a psychiatric hospital, where he also went. On the spot, one of the doctors described the Panneti case to him and briefly told him its story. Constantine then approached the patient he was trying to talk to. Hearing no answer, he stepped closer and saw that Marcello could not be contacted in any way.[6]

That same night, Henry began to set traps in the house, one of which was climbed by the father, who did not see the suspect in the son. John and Chas, on the other hand, decided to return to the mill, where they tried to find a trail. There, the exorcist saw that all similar killings were on one geomagnetic line, which allowed them to predict the next victim. Immediately afterwards, John was looking for something to capture the beast when, in the artifacts, Chas found the Sword of Night that forced the user to tell the truth. Thus, he accidentally revealed that John was too self-righteous and that his wife had departed from him. The exorcist quickly took the artifact from his friend and tried not to comment on the whole incident, finding the item he had been looking for. Soon after, they returned to Birmingham, where they set out to find another youth controlled by the spirit.

During the day, Constantine watched Henry play in the school playground. He noticed his strange behavior and called his teacher to react. Unfortunately, it was too late and the young man hurt his peer, for which he was blamed by the school. Soon after, John went to the boy's house, where he pretended to be the new school counselor. As he was let into the house as soon as he got close to Henry, he unexpectedly showed his parents with a mandrake root that he was not their son. This angered Daryl, who stunned Constantine. When he woke up, he was in custody, and his prison companion turned into Manny, with whom he had an argument. After a short time, the accusations were withdrawn by Clarie, who saw the change in her son and wanted to know how to deal with it. They went for a coffee together, where John explained what was happening to her son and came up with a plan, fearing an exorcism after what happened to Astra.

He ordered the woman to return home, trick her son to sleep, and then return to him. After she did so, she met Constantin and Chase in one of the abandoned houses nearby, who were going to help with the ritual. It was the home of the first tragedy of its kind, to which John intended to bind the spirit. Unfortunately, the trial was unsuccessful. Chandler had the idea that Marcello was never possessed, he only killed his parents himself. So they decided to go home, but the boy started to run away, stunning Daryl. John chased him and caught him in the Fear Room, where he drove the Panneti spirit out of Henry's body, which he then gave to his parents. As it turned out, Marcello murdered his parents himself, but the act was so traumatic that the soul left the body and began to kill. During the exorcism, John sent the boy's soul into his body, which was under the care of doctors from the psychiatric hospital, thanks to which he could not harm anyone else.

When Zed returned to the mill, she began telling John about what had happened to her. The exorcist became interested only after a friend mentioned the vision. So he saw a connection between the stain on the bloody map at Briarwood and the preacher who had risen and began to work miracles. So together they decided to investigate the whole matter, despite Martin's lack of faith. After reaching the town, they walked to the church where Zachary was preaching. They have witnessed the things he does, including the healing of the old man's eyesight. John also noted that Zed was an unbeliever, but their discussion of faith was interrupted by a preacher who began speaking in Enochian, the language of angels, which made Constantine suspect the preacher's power.

After mass, they decided to line up to Zach only for Zed to touch the man and learn something more through the vision. So it happened and the girl saw the hand extended towards the angel. This made Martin believe that the preacher's actions were right, but John showed otherwise by going to the great pond where all the animals in it died. For he knew it was a sign that something was wrong here. Soon after, Constantine was surprised by Zed's efforts to summon the Angel. The girl jokingly thought that he should ask nicely, and not perform rituals. When Manny finally showed up and found out about the Enochai-speaking preacher, he gave John a little hint, bending the rules of the Most High, then disappeared. Thus, the exorcist with the help of the confused Zed, using echolocation, tracked down Imogen - the angel whose feather was torn out by Zachary, which caused her to fall to the ground. They took her to a safe place, where Manny appeared after a while. It turned out that if the angel did not get her feather back, her soul would expire and she would cease to exist. So they decided to recover it, putting a protective spell around the shed before.[13]

Imogen reveals herself as fallen

Imogen reveals herself as fallen angel.

Meanwhile, on his porch, Zachary was arguing with Sarah, who was still against using a feather. The man, however, was not going to give up, even after learning that the man on whom he had performed the first miracle had killed a policeman. Angry at her sister, he ordered her to get out and never come back to his community. Some time later, the preacher was visited by Constantine, who was trying to collect the pen. The latter, however, inadvertently rejected the exorcist with a shockwave and ordered him to leave his home. As John returned to the tent, he noticed a man healed by a preacher attacking Zed. At the last moment, he managed to kill him, saving his friend. They both returned to the angels shortly after, interrupting their conversation about the suffering Imogen had experienced. For Manny wanted to know what it was like to feel pain. Knowing that the angels were short of time, John and Zed came up with a plan to try to support the preacher's compassion so that during a mass baptism in the lake, the woman was able to retrieve the feather. The whole crowd was interrupted by the attack of "ghouls" - healed by Zachary, which forced him, along with Constantine and Martin, to flee to the church.

There, John ordered Zed to run to Imogen and return her quill when he himself tried to stop the ghouls. It was then that Zachary realized his mistake and said that it was all his fault and that everything could have turned out differently had he not killed a man by accident one evening. Thus Constantine realized that they had made a mistake, because Imogen is not an angel of Heaven at all, but of Hell. So he decided to run to the shed and stop Zed, but when he arrived it was too late. Imogen showed her true form, the Fallen Angel, and tried to run away, but the previously created protective spell prevented her from leaving the shed. As it turned out, she herself put a feather in the preacher's hand in order to be in the human dimension and then be able to live in it. Knowing there was no way out, she grabbed Zed and was ready to kill her if John didn't pull the spell. The exorcist knew he could not stand up to its power and pleaded with Manny for help, who could not interfere with the events. The Angel, however, could not allow this to happen, and took over Martin's body, tearing out Imogen's heart, killing her. Soon after at the mill, Manny admitted to John that he was facing the consequences of his actions, but he knows that he did the right thing.

Masterminds of the Rising Darkness

Zed went back to drawing in order to forget about the recent events of Imogen. John recognized the Invunche sketches, powerful evil beings that had died out long ago. Suddenly, Anne Marie Flynn appears at the mill in an astral projection, asking Constantine for help and explaining the recent incidents in Mexico. She gives him the address where to go and then disappears. While packing, John explains to his friend who Anne was to him and at the same time forbids her to go, recognizing that she is still on sick leave. Together with Chase, they arrive at the designated address, which turns out to be a monastery. When the men saw Anne Marie, they were surprised that she became a nun. Then they go inside, where the woman briefly introduces the subject to her friends. They manage to establish that what the child took is clearly blurring its tracks. All the while John tried to improve his relationship with Anna, but she still held a grudge against the exorcist for what he had done in Newcastle.

Soon after, they both decided to check the baby's fetus, which, according to the local family, should be buried underground. So they went to the front of the Lopez house, where they found no fetus, but the fruit on the tree was made of skin and blood. John and Anne decided to explain everything to Hugo, describing the find as old ties to the Garden of Eden. It also recalls the story of the first humans on Earth, namely Eve and her sisters, who rejected Adam's offer to serve as goddesses in Hell. After returning to the monastery, it turned out that another child had disappeared. To everyone's surprise, it was a descendant of Hugo, more precisely a child of his eldest son. This made Constantine understand that the monster they were confronting wanted the Lopez blood. Against her will, Anne Marie decides to summon evil to the monastery, using a fountain.

The rite is stopped by sister Luisa, whom the exorcist suspects as being one of Eve's sisters. He pronounces their names one by one and when he comes across Lamashtu, she transforms into a devilish demon in front of his eyes and attacks him. However, John manages to break free, and the witch runs away. After informing his friends what they were struggling with, Constantine reassured Hugo that his descendants might be alive, as Lamashtu tends to slowly absorb the vital energy of babies. Together, they decided to find out about the Lopezs' past by visiting Hugo's mother. Pia Lopez told a story about a family that has had a problem with Brujería for years. John could not believe what he was hearing, because the sisters had been dead for a long time and he would not have had the strength to reach Earth. It was then that he realized that everything was to blame for the Coming Darkness, which was getting harder to deal with.[9]

Constantine unleashes the power of Pazuzu on Lamashtu

Constantine unleashes the power of Pazuzu on Lamashtu.

John has made a plan to get the kidnapped children back. He decided to fill the chicken with Hugo's blood and cast a special spell on him, thanks to which Lamasztu would see him as another child. These, however, had to be sacrificed by a woman, so Anne Marie agreed to this sacrifice. As soon as the witch took the bait, Hugo unexpectedly followed her in pursuit, trying to shoot her. At the last moment, the team stopped the man and the three of them went to the sewers to find the babies. They split up in the sewers to prevent Lamashtu from escaping. After a short search, John and Anne found the children and took them, but they were interrupted by a witch who had found out about the bait and was furious. Constantine used Icon of Pazuzu to send Lamashtu back to Hell, learning her connection to Brujería. After a while, they met with Chas, to whom John gave the child and left the catacombs. Suddenly, the exorcist and Anne Marie heard a strange scream that turned out to be Invunche. The man did not see any normal escape route, so the nun grabbed a gun and shot her former friend to gain time and run away with the last child. She referred to Constantine's words that no price is too high if an innocent person can be saved. The wound inflicted on him was so serious that he began to bleed out, attracting the demon.

Pazuzu

John possessed by Pazuzu.

Not wanting to die like this, he decided to allow himself to be possessed by the demon Pazuzu, whom he had summoned into his body, regenerating the wound and thus chasing away the terrified Invunche. After a while, Manny appeared at the exorcist, who was furious that he did not ask for help, but let the demon take over his body. He admitted that it's not like he can't help him - he just won't do it now. After the angel disappeared, Chas found John and pulled him out of the sewers. John told Chas how he survived the meeting with the Invunche, revealing that he was now possessed. He gave himself a few days before the demon completely took control of him, but admitted that if he failed to perform the planned self-exorcism, he would have to be killed. Suddenly, John began to deteriorate and he attacked Chandler and ran away. It wasn't long before Constantine began to recover, and there were many dead gangsters with torn limbs around him. Behind him stood the police, which arrested the man for mass murder. They took him to a local prison, where he met Stanley Gibson from the British consulate, who explained the whole incident to the exorcist. The man, however, could not help John, so he pounced on him, stealthily taking his wallet, and was led out by a guard.[2]

Anne Marie banishing the demon Pazuzu from Constantine

Anne Marie banishing the demon Pazuzu from Constantine.

John became acquainted with the prison trader Julio, who promised to take him to the chapel in exchange for the official's previously acquired wallet. On the way, the body of the dealer was taken over by Manny, who wanted to talk to the exorcist for a while. Constantine honestly admitted to him that he was afraid to die and was not yet ready for it. When Julio led him to the chapel, the man realized that he had been exposed to the Santa Muerta gang who wanted to avenge their murdered colleagues. It was then that Pazuzu woke up in the man who had torn the prisoners to pieces. When he woke up, he was in the prison square, where he hailed himself as the new ruler in order to have peace. After everyone parted ways, Anne Marie appeared in prison through an astral projection, finding out her friend's whereabouts. Soon after, Zed and Chas appeared in front of the prison, who were planning to go to the prison. Chandler, also intending to go inside, decided to use the easiest way and hit the policeman, thanks to which his plan was successful. Soon after, to the surprise of John's waning, Anne Marie also appeared, who promised to help. After finding a suitable place, they began exorcising themselves. They were surprised by the fact that at this stage of possession, holy water did not affect existence. The process was interrupted by Nahash - the tempter serpent, whose aim was to finish the exorcist. But he saw that he was possessed, and was glad that they would soon be allies.

Nevertheless, he attacked Chas, whose neck he broke, and in retaliation he was murdered by a nun with a mystical dagger. Soon after John awoke in the morgue next to Anne Marie, Chandler was also in the bag next to it. As the condition of the exorcist was not the best, they decided to move him to the mill. To this end, Julio collected entire supplies of heroin from all prisoners, which they then injected intravenously into Constantine. This gave them a way to take him to a specific location, but to distract the guards, Anne Marie used astral projection to create a naked copy of herself. After reaching the mill, taking advantage of John's unconsciousness, the team began to prepare the necessary things by tying the possessed man to the bed. When he awoke, he realized that he could not use the dictaphone because the demon would not listen to his voice. So he asked Anne Marie to perform an exorcism as she had the appropriate powers. However, she had to do it in Catholic, which allowed her to know the existence of Heaven and Hell. She agreed to this, warning Zed and Chas that at some point the demon would try to use their weaknesses against them. Anne has not forgiven herself for what she has done in Newcastle, and Pazuzu has taken control of Constantin. He started mocking his friends, trying to break them down and pointing out their greatest failures. Zed explained to the nun that she had to forgive herself as well, not only John, which would allow her to successfully complete the ritual. When the demon left the exorcist's body, Constantine thanked his friends for their help and would stay with him in such a difficult time. Soon after saying goodbye, John said goodbye to Anne Marie, apologizing for all his mistakes and promising to change.

Felix Faust (hooded)

Felix Faust had a grudge against John.

Zed was going to run away, believing that the mill was not a safe place and they might find her again. John tried hard to find out who he was still running from, hearing the name of the fanatic organization - the Resurrection Crusade - in response. When the exorcist found out that her friend's father was her leader, he understood her fears, promising protection as strong as his abilities would allow. The conversation was interrupted by a bloody appearance on the bloody map pointing to New York. Constantine understood that it might have something to do with Chas, who at this point was headed to his family to meet his daughter. They decided to prepare for the trip by taking with them many useful things, including the tendon from the Achilles heel. When Zed and John got a message from Chas, they went to the hospital where he and his daughter were. There he told his friends what had happened and stated that it was not an ordinary coma, as many patients suffered from the same. Constantine decided to check and found that Geralidne's soul was leaving the body. Horrified by the fact that some magician had managed to separate soul from body, he decided to contact an old friend who was a medium. Renee interrupted the conversation and returned to the room. She was furious that John had approached her daughter and expected an explanation from her ex-husband, but he heard only in response to help. Soon after, the three visited Fennel's store, which began to threaten Constantine with a shotgun. He wanted to help Zed and Chas, but he was not going to work with an eccentric exorcist who only thinks about himself. Desperate, Chandler, however, did not have time to negotiate with the man, so he tore his gun away and knocked him out, forcing him to help.

Fennel performed a ritual which allowed Geraldine to speak through his mouth. Then this one was interrupted, and the mysterious magician was surprised that someone was taking advantage of one of his victims. He recognized John and said he wouldn't be so easily defeated this time by burning Fennel's body alive. Constantine, however, remembered the spell cast by him and wrote it to Zed. Thanks to this, she tracked the location of the potential kidnapper, where the team went right after that. Once there, John deactivated the camouflage spell, discovering the mage's hideout, who turned out to be Felix Faust - a powerful wizard who managed to separate the body from the soul and intends to use it to increase his own power. Angry Chas, wanting to get his daughter back, attacked the mage, and Constantine had to make a pact with him. He was to return Geraldine's soul in exchange for helping the exorcist get rid of the Karabasan demon, to which the exorcist agreed. After leaving the hideout, John, furious with Chandler for disobeying him, dismissed him from the case and decided to act alone with Zed.[10]

Felix Faust burns Fennel

Fennel's gruesome death.

John and Zed went to an abandoned warehouse, which was probably the hideout of the demon. Martin agreed to act as bait in order to drag the monster into the previously prepared magic circle. Once Karabasan was in it, Constantine tried to set the circle on fire, but the lighter refused to obey. Therefore, to save his friend from danger, he used a stun gun, destroying the demon with tremendous voltage. Immediately after that, they returned to the hospital to return with Chas to meet Faust. Hearing this name, Renee intended to help the team, fearing for her daughter. Zed decided to stay with the woman to guard her daughter's body. Soon after, during the meeting with Felix, the mage broke the contract that John had defeated Karabasana by dissipating energy, rather than sending him to Hell as the contract mentioned at the beginning. Seeing no other way out, Constantine took his nervous friend outside, where he tried to calm him down. The latter, however, was not going to give up and stunned his friend, locking him in the car. He himself went to the magician with a proposal, offering him 32 souls in exchange for one - the soul of his daughter.

Sleep spell

Faust did not believe that one body could be such a "capacious vessel," so Chandler decided to show it to him by killing himself before his eyes. Soon Chas returned to life, surprising Faust, who was ready to accept the man's proposal. The latter, however, expected a handshake to "complete" the deal when John woke up and was about to save his friend. Chandler understood perfectly well that the magician could deceive him and tied him to himself with a tendon from his Achilles heel, then pulled a grenade from his pocket and pulled the pin, waiting for death. Then Renee appeared in the building, whom Chas ordered John to protect, shouting his last words before the explosion, which resulted in Faust being killed and the souls returned to their rightful owners. Several dozen minutes later, after the fire brigade arrived, John had the opportunity to quietly talk to Renee. He explained to her that Chas would be back and it would be long enough, depending on how violent his death was. He also tried to make excuses to himself that he didn't want to stand between their relationship and if he could change the time he would fix it. However, this cannot be done, and only thanks to him Chandler is still alive, like many other people. The next morning, Constantine waited in the hospital for Zed to wake up. When this happened, a weakened woman said that John's mother did not want him to blame himself for her death. Surprised by these words, he lay down next to his friend and began to think about his life.

Revealing spell

Revealing spell.

John was resting in the mill, talking to Gary Lester's reflection in the magic mirror. Suddenly Manny appeared, trying to get the exorcist to work. He only succeeded when he mentioned an old friend, Ritchie Simpson, who lectured on a voice recorder at university. After the class was over, he heard a question from Constantine from the crowd of students, realizing that his day would be spoiled by an ex-friend. He took him to his office, where he learned of the death of Gary Lester and that something dark was going on around him, and that John intends to face it. The conversation was interrupted by a phone call to the professor from one of the students, Adam, who informed about his absence due to the unexpected death of his friend. They both immediately went to the scene, where the exorcist stealthily stole the policeman's notes, learning about the cause of death. On the night before school, on the wake of the student's death, Ritchie and John met Lily from whom they learned about what the four had been doing a few days ago. Later that night John decided to investigate the case alone and went to the cemetery described by Lily. There, he was surprised by the presence of Manny, who tried to show the man the mistake he still made about his friends.

During the conversation, John found a clue above one of the graves, so he decided to use a spell that depicts the runes. Thus, he learned that a magical ritual was being performed here, related to the Egyptian culture. Constantine then returned to Ritchie's office, to whom he presented his discovery. It was then that the professor remembered the journal of Jacob Shaw he had. The man described there journeys to other worlds that ended tragically for him. To his surprise, the journal disappeared from Simpson's collection, indicating that it was causing campus problems. They also understood that Adam might try to go back there and they went to the cemetery as soon as possible. It was too late to rescue, however, because the boy's body had cut defensive wounds, which eventually led to him bleeding out. Everything was different in Shaw's world as Adam was trying to protect Miranda from Jacob. Soon after, Ritchie and John returned to campus, where they learned of the death of Miranda, who they found dead in a dance studio. At last Simpson began to understand how Constantine was feeling and what he was hiding. He decided that they were both like cancer that spreads disease on and on. Nevertheless, they remembered that they could save another person and visited Lily, to whom they gave the news of Adam's death.[17]

Constantine and Ritchie enter Shaw's world

Constantine and Ritchie enter Shaw's world.

The terrified girl was taken to the mill, where their goal was to deal with her problem. A moment of inattention made Lily look at the phone and unknowingly, through the reflection, she found herself in the other world. After a little argument, the men decided to visit this mystical world on their own and performed a ritual that allowed them to enter there. Moments later, they found each other and together they traveled on, where Simpson had the opportunity to demonstrate what he had learned over the years - modification of worlds. They didn't realize Shaw was watching them, until he finally decided to show up. Ritchie then realized that there was a grain of truth in the legend of Jacob's second life. The enraged men tried to fight the enemy, but this was his world and he held power here, wounding them.

Constantine explained to Ritchie that the wounds he was inflicting on them were not real and he could fight it. Thus, the professor took courage, stood up and began to modify the world against Shaw's principles, destroying it once and for all. Because of this act, the apartment began to collapse, which forced Ritchie and John to flee. After a while, Lily was brought to the exit by friends who could not leave this place themselves. Thus, Simspon showed the girl how to get out of this world. Constantine understood that Ritchie might want to stay here because he saw the potential of this place that Shaw did not see. Sam went back to reality and watched, and after a while Ritchie returned as well. After shaking off and returning to teaching, the professor stopped using the dictaphone during his lectures and spoke himself - he taught based on what he had experienced.

John talk with Zed about her powers and weeknes

John talk with Zed about her powers and weaknesses

Constantine returned to the mill, where Chas studied the bloody map and the radio for information on supernatural events. After a while, the man noticed the thread he was following into the vast corridors. In one of the rooms, he met a meditating Zed who pretended that she just wanted to rest. In reality, however, she was trying to run away from her abilities, which John didn't particularly like. Immediately after that, the exorcist returned to Chas, where Manny's body took over his friend's body, who was furious with his ally for sitting idle. He thought the map was out of order and burned it, then told about a patient who was rushed to the hospital, who was suspected of having an overdose. On the angel's advice, the team drove to the local hospital, and to make appearances, John stuck a screwdriver in Chas's leg.

Thanks to this, they came closer to the described patient with black veins. When Zed tried to inspect her with her visions, she saw a bright light, but the narrative interrupted the cardiac arrest of the test patient whom the doctors were trying to save. As if that were not enough, Martin had an unknown seizure and she had to go to a hospital bed. As soon as it was stabilized, a brain tomography was ordered. Constantine at that time returned to Chas, whom he told about everything, while looking at the intrusive patient - Morris. The occultists went to the hospital morgue, where they wanted to examine Linda's body. It turned out that even after death, it was filled with powerful black magic, which worried John, who ordered his friend to look for clues in Jasper's archives. Soon after, the man went to Zed's room, where he found out about the friend's results as presented by Dr. Galen. Everything indicated that she had a tumor at the temporal lobe that could trigger her visions. As soon as the doctor left the room, Constantine tried to explain that people were always looking for a cause-and-effect relationship without seeing the other side of the medallion.

John and Manny in St

John and Manny in St. Catherine's Hospital.

Soon after, the man, stressed by the whole situation, went to the roof, where he was going to smoke a cigarette. Dr. Carroll wanted to help himself, which Manny entered a moment later. John told the angel to help Zed, but he tried to avoid, explaining that he could not interfere in her fate. Therefore, the exorcist stunned the angel with air from Hades, and then cast a spell on him to "lock" him in the human body. As a result, Manny lost access to his angelicness and was forced to help John, who, following the flashing light, found another victim in the hospital - Duncan Hall. The man's body was torn open and his heart glowed purple. It was then that John and Manny began to put the facts together, concluding that there was a powerful artifact called a Black diamond involved in it all. Consequently, Constantine decided to return to the mill, and Manny would use the human body to search the patient files to discover what the two victims had in common. The exorcist found a piece of artifact in Jasper's hideout, which he checked on Chas, while Manny was seduced by a nurse, helping him achieve his goal. Soon after, the two men met outside the hospital, where an angel began to describe the experienced feelings. Thus, they again found out that the killer can only get rid of those who did not take advantage of the second chance. So they suspected Morris, who had a colorful past. John decided to check it out alone and sent Manny over to Zed.[18]

Zed Martin first time see real Manny

Zed sees Manny for the first time..

Constantine searched for Morris, finding him suffocated by an unknown force of darkness that deafened the exorcist. As soon as he woke up, he called Manny, with whom they discovered Dr. Galen, who would be the alleged killer. They ran to Zed, fearing for her life, where they made many accusations against the doctor. He denied it, but then started to run away. The team followed him, where it was Zed who understood her visions. To make these come true, John decided to free Manny from the doctor's body, and then tried to fight the monster. Unfortunately to no avail, so for the first time he put all his hopes on Manny, awaiting his arrival. According to Zed's visions, a heavenly light appeared, to which Galen began to follow, taking him with him, and the very shard that was in his body merged with the shard of Jasper's diamond. After these events, Martin went to the church, where John found her. Soon after that, Manny also appeared, whom the woman saw with her own eyes. She was happy to be able to talk to the angel, so Constantine decided to leave them alone.

Constantine and Jim Corrigan

Constantine and Jim Corrigan.

After Jim Corrigan took over the deceased detective's case and looked at the documentation, he contacted John and Zed, whom he met at the bar. There he showed them pictures of his dead partner - Clement Dupree, who had been mummified. There was also a strange symbol on his body, so the team decided to check the grave of the deceased. On the spot, it turned out that he was investigating the case of the disappearance of three girls of the same age and linked it all to the theory of the Blood Moon Tetrad. The symbol itself was used to stigmatize witches in the 12th century, implying that the girls were abducted by a Satanist. He needed each of them until one of the full moons, thus making sacrifices to renew the new cycle. Corrigan got a call from the police station where he found out about another kidnapping. Meanwhile, the conversation between Zed and John was interrupted by the sudden awakening of a pulled-out corpse, into which Gary Lester had entered, alerting his friend to a designated reward for his head.

Occultists and a detective visited the mother of the missing person, who told about their last quarrel. The three decided to investigate the matter in Vesta's room, where Zed could not see anything in the vision due to her confusion. Soon after John decided to use a special ritual to find out where Vesta was. However, it mainly consisted of an electric shock, which Jim and Martin did not like, but they achieved their goal, knowing about the last whereabouts of the girl. They made their way quickly to the scene where Constantine noticed they were being watched. As expected, they were attacked by Papa Midnite's voodoo zombie, whom Corrigan had shot at the last moment. John knew time was running out, so he asked Zed to focus her thoughts and help them with her abilities. Thus, the woman obtained the address to which they immediately went.

At the scene, they found the crucified body of a security guard, which was sealed with the same symbol as the previous victims. The exorcist knew that something was up, so he ordered his friends to flee, promising to call back soon. As expected, Papa Midnite himself attacked him shortly after, successfully hitting him with the As Winchester's bullet. After a while it turned out that Constantine had faked his own death using the body of a bodyguard and a camouflage spell. Thus, he managed to stun his opponent and take his weapon from him. He immediately went to the house where the girl was probably being held. There he discovered the bodies of the other three victims whose ghosts Vesta had seen. After a while, he met Corrigan and Martin, with whom he began searching for the child and the torturer.

After finding her, Zed took the girl to a safe place, and John and Jim took care of the criminal. The detective initially planned to hand him over to the police, when an exorcist explained to him about the atrocities he had committed. He did not want him to spend only a few years in prison for everything he had done and to be released again, so Jim released him, ordered him to flee and shot him, ending his miserable life. After that, Vesta returned to her mother, and Corrigan spent time with Martin at the bar, where he found out about his future, but decided to make up with her anyway by kissing the woman. John himself met Manny outside, to whom he told him that day after day he faced evil, but today was a real hell for him. He did not fight a demon, a monster from the abyss, but a man - extremely dangerous. At the same time, he assured the angel that he would not run away from the battlefield after all, because he only played when he was sure that he would win.[19]

Restoring Sara Lance's soul

Team Arrow and John Constantine prepare to restore Sara Lance's soul

John preparing to restore Sara's soul.

In late 2015, John received a call from his old friend Oliver Queen asking him to come to Star City to help him restore the soul of his friend Sara Lance which he accepted. He met with Team Arrow and explained that Sara needed restoration of her soul, not an exorcism, as her sister Laurel mistook it for. John also commented on the number of pretty girls Oliver had surrounded himself with, which made them feel somewhat uncomfortable. Much to Felicity's confusion, he requested a peacock feather, which he used only to scratch his back. John explained that the ritual would transport them to the "other side" where Sara's soul was trapped, and transported himself, Oliver and Laurel. Upon entering the spirit world, in the shape of Nanda Parbat, John, Oliver, and Laurel found the room where Sara was trapped in the Lazarus Pit. John held off the spirit of a League of Assassins member, as Oliver and Laurel freed Sara. All of them returned safely, with Sara restored to life. As John left, Oliver thanked him for his help, but John also told him he'd had a dark feeling since being in town, Oliver confirming it as their newest problem Damien Darhk. John, however, warned Oliver to be careful around Darhk and advised him leave town while he still could, before departing.[12]

Hell

By late February 2016, John somehow found his way to Hell,[20] presumably to fulfill his promise of saving Astra Logue.[5]

By May, John had escaped Hell, allowing Oliver to finally get in contact with him again, asking for a means to defeat Darhk's magic. In response, Constantine sent Oliver to meet with Esrin Fortuna, who had a better understanding of Darhk's magic, and could possibly teach him to defend against it.[11]

Meeting the Legends

John meeting Sara

John meeting Sara on the Waverider.

In late 2017, John had encountered a demon that was possessing a little girl who knew about Sara Lance, so he infiltrated the Waverider as Sara dropped off Jax. Stating she had a debt to repay to him after he saved her soul two years ago, he requested her help to face it.[21]

With their help he learned that the girl was Nora Darhk who was slowly being taken over by a demon called Mallus. However, the second exorcism again failed, with Constantine, Sara, and Leo Snart being sent back in time by Mallus.

Sara found herself being plagued with visions courtesy of Mallus. Although Constantine was able to banish them away and the two talked about their past and sins. The two flirt with one another leading to the two having sex. After their encounter, they saved Leo from being lobotomized, and Sara decided to travel to Mallus' spirit world again to use the connection to power up the same transportation spell that was used to send them to the past. They eventually returned to 2017 however Constantine couldn't save Nora once they were back due to the emotional manipulation of her father who told her that the order would help her. Before he left the Waverider he confided in Ray Palmer that despite Sara's strong will she would eventually succumb to Mallus as Nora did. He also said if that was ever to happen, then Ray should kill her.[22]

Constantine Ava and Gary

Constantine, Ava and Gary.

Sometime later, he gave the Legends information on the Death Totem, which was in the possession of Elvis Presley.[23] He then attempted to assist Ava and Gary in tracking down the Waverider after Sara Lance was possessed by Mallus via the Death Totem. Using the Egyptian dream temple technique, John managed to locate Sara's soul in Mallus's realm.[3]

Following the Legends' victory over Mallus, Constantine, accompanied by Gary who was dressed as the former, found the Legends vacationing in Aruba and presented them a severed dragon head. After confirming that it was Sara's idea to release Mallus, John informed them that Mallus wasn't the only evil they released.[24] Following their "introduction" to the dragon, the Legends stayed on a lookout for magical creatures for 5 months, but met none, and decided that John was wrong. Meanwhile, Constantine went on his own, although he interacted with Gary, with the two men having an intimate relationship of some sort; although, according to John, by the rules of magic Gary was still considered a virgin.[25]

Dating Desmond

At some point during the five months, Constantine spent some time in New Orleans. At a local bar, he was served by Desmond, and the two shared an instant connection. They spend the night together and, despite John's aversion to any emotional attachment to others and in spite of himself, he fell in love. The two started a relationship and soon moved in together in a loft they rented in New Orleans. Not long after, John was being targeted by the demon Neron, who owned the deed to Constantine's soul, that wanted his help in usurping the triumvirate ruling Hell.

Constnatine sending Dez to hell

Worried by his boyfriend safety, John squeezed a promise from Dez that the man would leave town and stay away from him until it was over. Instead, unknown to Constantine, Dez decided to make a deal with Neron and bond his soul with the demon in exchange for sparing John's life. The deal was later made public to John when in an attempt to send Neron to Hell, he had to sent Dez there as well. John does, for the sake of the world, and he later crumbles with grief in heartbreak as Desmond is thrown into hell.[26]

Joining the Legends

Magical Fugitives
John Constantine uses magic

John casts a spell to send a unicorn to hell.

Sometimes later, five months after his last meeting with the Legends, he approached Sara, informing her that the danger was still there and the release of Mallus has accelerated the Rising Darkness. He left her with the enchanted bones of a saint so that she'd be able to divine disturbances across the timeline. The disturbance ended up in the appearance of a Hellish Unicorn in 1969's Woodstock, leading to the aberration of "Woodstock Massacre", where many attending hippies were slain by the beast. Sara asked John to help, as the two went on a search for the unicorn and the other Legends affected by the unicorn glitter. The two got in a fight, John saying that Sara should not pursue love and long-lasting relationships, as the people of their craft are cursed to hurt their loved ones, while Sara stated that it was John's own character that made him hurt and leave behind the people he loved, and in fact the loved ones made the heroes stronger for their connection. John ended up instrumental in figuring out the potion and the ritual needed to unmask the beautiful unicorn as a hellish nightmare horse, and then drag it to hell. Using Gary Green as bait, John managed to exorcise the hellish unicorn, at the expense of Gary's nipple. John tried to comfort Gary, joking that if his soul is going to hell, it's gonna meet Gary's nipple right there, before the two discussed personal relationship problems. John was later asked to join the Legends team, but declined, returning to his hotel in 2018 and drinking himself to sleep. He was suddenly attacked by an invisible force, before the bloody letters spelling "I'm coming for you, Johny" appeared on his mirror.[25]

Legends meet the Fairy Godmother

Legends meet the Fairy Godmother.

The mysterious attack prompted John to accept Sara's offer and sneak upon the Waverider, bringing a large case of his stuff on board and making a "contract" with the Legends: full benefits, a paid holiday, no cheesy costumes, in exchange for his help with the mystical fugitives. Secretly, John was hoping to find a way to save Dez by using the Waverider.[26] Although calling himself "no bloody Legend", Constantine has indeed enjoyed the benefits of Waverider, coming into conflict with Mick Rory over their use of the ship's facilities. He would be instrumental in figuring out the mystery of the Salem witch trials aberration, noting that the spells used on villagers needed to have a vocal component in them, and if the mother could not cast them, then it must have been the work of her daughter, Prudence. As it turned out, the accused "witch's" daughter has made a contract with a time-displaced the Fairy Godmother, angry at humans for banishing her into Mallus's realm. Instead of granting the wishes of shoes of glass and various trinkets, the Godmother was eager to help the girl's revenge against the villagers, trying to seduce her into using the fairy's power to bring fire and brimstone upon the angry Puritans. John wasn't able to banish the Fairy Godmother, as her spellcasting was much quicker, allowing her to overpower the Legends. When John tried to stop Fairy Godmother and Prudence from leaving the ship, he was silenced by the fairy's spell, sealing his mouth shut. After Zari Tomaz and Sara Lance managed to convince Prudence to call off the Fairy Godmother, the girl released her from their contract, allowing John to incapacitate the mystical witch. He then brought her to the forest and discussed the Godmother's fate, offering her a deal: others she enters a contract with him, or he sends her to Hell. Although she was scared of Hell, the Fairy Godmother chose to refuse John's offer, saying that she'd rather take on the forces of Hell than on the being that is currently pursuing Constantine. She taunted him on being "far more damned than she is" before John opened a portal that siphoned her into Hell.[27]

Later, when the team realizes the British Monarchy collapses due to a scandal involving Elizabeth II, Sara, Zari, Mick, and himself try to investigate a band called The Smell, where he accused one of the members of being a Leprechaun, a fight breaks out and causes Ray to get caught up with the band. After a fight with Mick, he goes to the bar his mother worked at to get a drink, being the first time he ever met her. Zari shows up to console him which backfires when John tries to neuter his dad. After fritizing out of existence twice and getting his nose broken, John and Zari have a heart-to-heart. When the fugitive, a shapeshifter named Charlie, takes the form of Ray and attacks the Legends, John tries to send her to hell, but Charlie takes different forms while saying how they were the monsters for trying to send an innocent to Hell. John stops the spell when she is in the form of Amaya, so when he uses a spell to take away her abilities she gets trapped in that form and gets thrown in the holding cell in the lab on the Waverider.[28]

Nate and Legends share a toast

John and the Legends celebrate the victory of their mission.

John went with the Legends to 1995 to Camp Ogawa to catch a Shtriga. John tried to question the children to find out what happened to the missing campers. Constantine and Ray found the children and upon reviving them all, John passed out and was taken to the Waverider to recover.[14] John was saved by Nora Darhk, who accepted dark magic in order to save him.[29] John and the others traveled to 1927 to capture a Minotaur. John made a distraction to confuse the Minotaur without success, but Hank Heywood managed to calm the beast. Later, John and the others celebrated with Nate.[30]

Changing the timeline

Constantine fixes the timeline.

John and the team traveled to New Olreans in 1856 to catch a Dybbuk, but he was distracted by Marie Laveau, who was Desmond's great-great-grandmother. John promised him that he would do everything possible to get his beloved out of Hell. With the help of Charlie, John and Charlie time traveled with Zari to prevent Desmond from being sent to Hell.[26] John attempts to use time travel to change history to save the life of Desmond, but when it creates worse timelines, he accepts the need to restore the original timeline and comes clean to the Legends about his issue with Neron.[31]

John and the Legends traveled to 1961 in Mexico City to make their idol, El Cura, and Konane, the Kaupe that Mona Wu let escape, become the best fighters in Mexico, which resulted in a success.[32] The Legends traveled to 1973 to kidnap Richard Nixon, who was telling all the truths of the Government. To escape Hank Heywood and Nate, John, Sara, Mick, Ray Palmer, and Mona took a road trip. During the journey, the entire team shared their secrets due to an Agent of Ma'at. John and Sara managed to calm Mona, who was turned into Wolfie. Mona and the Legends were caught by Hank, but thanks to Nate, they managed to become allies of the Bureau again.[33]

Constantine and Nora take on Neron

John and Nora Darhk expel Neron from Desmond's body.

During Hank's funeral, John knew of Neron's presence and used Mick as a vessel to speak with Hank to discover Neron's plan.[34] John eventually manages to save Desmond by luring Neron out of his body.[35] However, when Neron takes control of Ray Palmer's body, John enters Hell in order to save him.[36] In Hell, John received an offer from Satan to save Ray or Astra's life. John chose Astra, but she grew up in Hell and doesn't want to be saved.[37]

The Heyworld visitors, Legends, and magical fugitives attempt to bring Nate back to life.

After recovering Ray's soul with the help of Nora Darhk, John deceives Neron into breaking his own word. Neron had promised not to hurt Nate Heywood. So, Nate (while in disguise) fought against Neron in Heyworld, forcing the demon out of Ray's body and John finally killed him. John used Tabitha 's staff to revive Nate as everyone sang Sweet Baby James to help. After Nate's resurrection, John and the team left Heyworld for new adventures.[38]

John Constantine for Barry, Mia and Sara

John using his magic.

After Oliver Queen was killed in the effort to evacuate Earth-38, Sara Lance, Barry Allen, and Mia Queen asked John to use his magic and find an Earth with a working Lazarus Pit. After finding a universe that could fit their needs, Sara had Constantine promise that once Oliver came back, John could retrieve Oliver's soul, but due to the dying multiverse, his magic failed when he tried using a spell to get to Oliver's purgatory in order to get the latter's soul back.[39]

Sara needs John to promise her.

As a result, Constantine, Diggle and Mia visited Earth-666 to ask Lucifer Morningstar's help in a last-ditch attempt to retrieve Oliver's soul from purgatory. In purgatory, they encounter a Jim Corrigan doppelgänger, who transfers the powers of the Spectre to Oliver for him to use to save the Multiverse, so Oliver decides not to return. Jim then teleported John, Mia and Diggle back to Earth-1.[15]

Later, John as well as everyone in the multiverse except for the seven Paragons, was killed in an antimatter wave by the Anti-Monitor on December 10, 2019,[15] only to be restored a month later, after the Paragons and the Spectre created a new universe.[40]

New multiverse

At some point in the history of Earth-Prime, John met the owner of a scrapyard nicknamed "Old Man Joe"; in the yard, located between John Constantine's house and London, there was a 1975 Fiat that was possessed by a demon which ultimately John exorcized.[41]

After the events of Heyworld, Constantine became famous, to the point of being the cover of a magazine. Due to Gary Green using a wish from his Fairy Godmother, Constantine was forced to take the former Time Agent on as his apprentice. He made the most of it by forcing Gary to carry his magical gear and take care of talking to people annoying him on-job. John did his best to teach Gary magic, but the poor sap couldn't even handle simple teleportation spell; Gary ended up walking backwards for miles.[42]

Fighting the Encores

During the recording of the documentary Meet the Legends, John and Gary were called by a mother who had her son possessed by a demon. John and Gary went to their home and found out that the demon was Masher. After talking to him, John sent him back to hell, freeing the boy. Later, John and Gary made a video call to Waverider and said that Astra released the worst souls from Hell. Later, John returned to Waverider and drank some of Rasputin's blood to perform a spell to get into hell, Sara told him to be careful.[42]

In Hell, Constantine meets with Astra, facing her about the spirits she discharged. She declines in light of the fact that those spirits are giving her with new spirits. She is likewise tormenting Masher and then makes it disappear. Constantine comes back to the Waverider, frustrated. Constantine briefs the Legends about Astra's arrangement. They feels that perhaps Astra can in any case be spared, however Constantine says no. Then Constantine, Sara and Ray go to Los Angeles in 1947 after an encore. There, they discover the ashes of a person who was killed by one of the encores. They are before long defied by a lady with a firearm and gloss over themselves as the dead person's accomplice. The lady is Jeanie Hill who recruited them to shield her from her beau Benjamin Siegel who is resurrected.

Constantine and stand up to her. Constantine finds a message in the matchbook he found at the PI's office. He meets with Jeanie and uncovers he knows where the shakedown reserve is. On the off chance that she gets the weapon, he'll give her the extortion. And afterward Constantine and Jeanie hookup. Later, Jeanie betrays Constantine, holding the mystical firearm on him with the goal that she can take the shakedown to utilize herself. He winds up giving her the coercion material. So, Jeanie begins her vehicle and it detonates. On the Waverider, Constantine hauls Bugsy to hell with him to stand up to Astra with one projectile left in the mysterious weapon yet he discloses to her that he's never abandoning her. He utilizes the last shot to obliterate Bugsy. John later tells Sara and Ray the firearm is currently gone.[43]

Later in Northumberland in the United Kingdom, Constantine and Gary show up at what is basically Constantine's old home where he experiences himself aside from it's not him. It's Charlie, however Constantine is troubled to see her. He discloses the Newcastle Crew to Charlie and the incredible witch he came to counsel: Astra's expired mother, Natalie. After a motivational speech from Charlie, he enters a door where Natalie's spirit is.[44]

Gary and Charlie remain outside the room that contains Astra's dead mother with Gary choosing he needs to go in there to spare Constantine, however his endeavor to use enchantment to open the entryway falls flat, just to take out the door handle, discharging the witch. Constantine gets nervous and asks Gary what he has done. Later, they see the apparition of Natalie and her clarifies the genuine tale about Astra, how Constantine bungled Natalie's revival prompting the entirety of this. Constantine goes on an excruciating outing through a world of fond memories, conceding Natalie's restoration was his thought. It's likewise uncovered that Constantine was enamored with Natalie yet he picked enchantment over her. Natalie then owns Charlie. He concedes that he adored her and he took her back to demonstrate that he was on the right track to pick enchantment. Natalie uncovers to Constantine that the Loom of Fate is a genuine article and not only a story. Turns out Charlie broke the Loom of Fate and dissipated the pieces over the Multiverse. Constantine had his soul token meddled with by Astra and it accelerated the dormant cancer in his lungs to the state they would be in 2030. So, Constantine faints.[7]

John talks to Astra in Purgatory

John talks to Astra in Purgatory.

He is taken to Waverider by his friends but then he leaves. He tried to make a deal with the angel Gabriel, but he didn't accept. John ultimately poisoned himself to go out on his own terms; however, he met Astra and promised to find the Loom of Fate to bring back her mother. Astra gave John back his decade of life so he could fulfill his side of the bargain.[45]

The Loom of Fate

Ray and Nora's wedding

John tried to question Charlie to find out about the Loom, but Charlie wouldn't let him. He would talk to "Nate", who was actually Charlie, he advised him to go to the North Pole to find them and John got ready to look for them. John came back with nothing and met the real Nate and got upset that Charlie cheated on him. He returned to his house where he would meet Damien Darhk and the two were going to fight, but the fight was avoided by Nora Darhk, and she lied saying that John was her fiancé, and he followed Nora's game. John was having dinner together with Sara, Ava, Damien and Nora, and they planned to murder Darhk while John and Damien talked about magical things. He watched the arguments between everyone and John stopped the charade and Nora revealed the truth to Damien and Damien wanted to kill everyone and John confronted Damien, and they were sent by Pippa to Mr. Parker's Cul De Sac. John would talk to Charlie to convince her to find the Loom and Charlie and John apologized as good friends and decided to search for the Loom together and after learning the lesson they all went back to the real world and John would attend Ray and Nora's wedding at his house.[46]

Legends' final mission with Ray

John and the Legends celebrate Ray's latest mission.

John and the Legends traveled to 1594 to successfully obtain the first piece of the Loom of Fate, but Ray wanted to make the mission longer so that his last mission would be epic. Constantine noticed the presence of something, but accidentally caused a fight at the bar. To fix the timeline, John and the team did a theatrical play to inspire William Shakespeare to write Romeo and Juliet.[47]

John, Sara, and Charlie traveled to British Columbia to find the next piece of the loom, but were found by Atropos, Charlie's sister. John tried to face Atropos, but lost in the fight and Atropos knocked him out to fool Sara and Charlie. John was found by Charlie, and they managed to find the second piece, but they had to flee quickly with Sara, since Atropos was chasing them. After Behrad's death, John was confronted by Zari, who told him not to leave him until they found the last piece and revived Behrad.[48]

To find the last piece, John, Sara, Ava, Mick, Zari, and Gary did a ritual to travel to the past, but everything went wrong when Sara fainted and John and Zari traveled through time alone. He and Zari traveled to 1910 in their house, which was formerly a hotel. John and Zari met Mrs. Hughes, who cared for them, but John knew that Hughes was actually Enchantress.

Encores and John Constantine have a standoff

Constantine and the Encores fight over the last piece of the loom.

The duo realized that Jack the Ripper, Black Caesar, Henry VIII, Brutus, Bonnie, and Clyde were revived as encores, so John knocked out Jack to pretend to be him and stop the Encores. John discovered that the Encores were looking for the piece, so John agreed to have a competition with weapons from hell for the winner to obtain the piece.

John was discovered, but Zari pretended to be Cleopatra to fool the villains. John and Zari became friends, and together they managed to assassinate Jack, Clyde, and Bonnie, managing to obtain the last piece of the loom. The Legends came to rescue them and before leaving 1910, John spoke with Enchantress and revealed that he already knew her secret. Returning to the ship, John was surprised to see Astra.[49]

Redeeming Astra

Constantine and Astra board the Waverider and proceed to where Clotho is mediating as she prepares to manipulate the Loom; Constantine almost steps into the urine puddle of Gary Jr. as Gary's emotional support animal runs out the room. Ava, Zari, and Nate are there also, but the women want to each use the Loom for a different reason. Ava wants the Loom to awaken Sara from her coma while Zari wants Behrad resurrected. Astra adds her desire for her mother to the debate. Zari asks John for his opinion and he sheepishly sides with Astra because he has made a promise; Nate notices Constantine's reaction and sides with Zari to further endear himself with her. Clotho decides that Behrad will be first, making Ava angry, but Clotho's decision is final.

The Legends wear sunshades as Clotho places the rings together and they transform into a shimmering golden cloth. Clotho manipulates the cloth and announces that she has found Behrad's thread. However, an explosion occurs as she tries to alter it, causing the Waverider to lose power. Clotho tells the others that she is not powerful enough to handle that level of magic without the other Fates; though Astra offers to help as she was groom by Lachesis to be a Fate, Clotho denies her, causing Constantine to volunteer to do research to see some other way to amass enough power, to Astra's anger.

As Constantine researches, Astra is accused of stealing the Loom rings when they disappear; Constantine vouches for her, but it is not enough to keep her from being imprisoned until the culprit is discovered. The mystery is solved when it is discovered that Gary Jr. is a hellhound with the power of manipulation. Constantine convinces Sara, now awake but blind, to protect him until he can cast a spell to banish the immortal dog, citing that Sara is not deaf, invoking her training as an assassin. Sara protects Constantine from attack until Astra arrives with the hound's real name, which was needed for Constantine's spell.

Glowing Legends

John glows with immortality.

After Gary has retrieved the rings from the ship's septic system,[50] John has him retrieve books from his house and bring them there so everyone can research. The team learns about the Chalice of Dionysus and Nate Heywood's encounter with it in the past, causing a quest to Hudson University to use it. Later, the Legends' women create the sorority Delta Chi Sigma in John Constantine's house using portal technology and win a drink from the Greek god Dionysus, causing John to glow with immortality as everyone partakes except Zari.[51]

Relationship with Zari
Legends see a group of zombies

John and the Legends see zombies.

The Legends soon realize that Astra has disappeared and has taken the Waverider with her, causing the others to be stranded at Constantine's house. The Legends begin a journey to London to get a time courier to get to the time ship. During the trip, Zombies attack the team but John has fun because they do not attack him.

John becomes Zari's protector because only she is in the position to die as she did not drink earlier. The bus that Mick Rory had carjacked was damaged, so the Legends opted to walk to London; Zari did not like this choice and sought to find a vehicle. John and she went to "Old Man Joe"'s scrapyard and found themselves surrounded by zombies. Constantine cast a spell that temporarily stopped Zari's heart so they could get to a working truck without fighting the monsters. John was forced to use CPR to revive Zari when she did not awaken when she should have. He and Zari then went to retrieve the others.

Legends share how they would use the Loom

The Legends wait for the time courier to charge.

At London, the Legends enter the Time Bureau which appeared as a pub to find that the time courier was not charged; this discouraged Zari and she ran off. John followed and talked to her, the conversation ultimately resulting in them having sex. Constantine and Zari returned, with Charlie staring at them. As the zombies gathered outside the pub, John and the others discussed what they would do with the power of the Loom; John revealed that all he wanted was for Astra to be happy.

The Legends lost their day of immortality just as the zombies attacked; they all battled for their lives as Charlie took the time courier and escaped to the Waverider.[41]

Reality was rewritten and John was a television character on the show "Highcastle Abbey" where he was a manservant to the Logue family, working to make Astra happy. Ultimately, Constantine and Astra rebelled against their scripts and caused Charlie to free them to reality.[52]

The Legends split into two groups, one assigned to find the Waverider, the other to change reality. Constantine is noticed by a person who realizes that he was from television; since everyone in Loomworld wore jumpsuits, Constantine talked the man and his friends to trade clothes for autographs to be less apparent.

Gaining access to the Loom, Constantine was told by Sara to destroy the magical device. John tells Astra that since her mother was a natural conduit for magic, then she is one also, and powerful enough to focus that power into destroying the Loom. As John cast a spell, Astra had a memory that weakened the Loom's shimmer, but suddenly, Astra faltered. Unexpectedly, John was called by Sara to open the room's door; Atropos flew into the Loom and Sara caused her and the Loom's destruction by entangling their threads. The Legends escaped in the Waverider and went four months into the future.

Sara noticed that she was no longer blind, causing Constantine to explain that with Atropos dead, Sara has also lost her precognitive powers. While investigating what has happened over the past months, the Legends learn that people are addicted to the Fatewatch. John went with both versions of Zari and Behrad to the building that once housed Clotho Productions to find the origin of the Fatewatch; it was discovered that Gideon was the new Loom of Fate.

John and Behrad left the two women to hack Gideon while they joined the other Legends in their fight against Lachesis and her Encores.

Astra gives John his soul token

John receives his soul token.

After victory was achieved, John spent time with Zari Tarazi that night. The next day, Zari Tomaz returned to the World between worlds. To celebrate their victories and to drown their sorrows, the Legends went to a concert held by The Smell; there, Astra gave John his soul token, telling him that it is rent because she was moving into his house.[53]

Abduction of Sara

Aliens scattered throughout history

After the celebration, Constantine and Zari went to a hotel to spend the night together. The next morning, Constantine chatted with Zari about their relationship, but they were interrupted by Ava and Mick who informed them of Sara's disappearance. Constantine and the others questioned David Bowie and discovered that Sara was abducted by aliens. Constantine took Zari home to search for Astra, and they reported to Astra everything that happened and found a chrysalis in Gary's room and discovered that Gary is an alien.

Returned on the Waverider, Constantine cast a spell for Ava to communicate with Sara, but for a short time and John could no longer bear and was saved by Zari causing Ava and Sara's communication to be lost. Zari and Constantine spoke to Astra again and Astra questioned their relationship and Constantine and Zari said goodbye, returning to the Waverider to start the search of Sara.[54]

John and the team traveled to 1955 in San Bernardino to find an Alien, who would make a massacre. He, Spooner and Ava would go to a butcher shop where they would find the Big Belly Burger mascot eating meat excessively. They discovered that the secret sauce is the problem and John would go to his house to bring a book to find out where the sauce comes from and when looking for it he would not listen to Astra's problems.[55] John returned and located where the sauce was coming from and would take them to Rhonda Beeman's house where they would meet a cocoon of an alien known as a Giant air feeder and upon seeing it come out of the cocoon and eat Rhonda, John, Ava and Spooner They left the house to go to Big Belly Burger and stop the alien. John and the girls arrived on time and saw how Spooner managed to defeat the alien and with the mission complete they returned to the Waverider.[56]

Relationship problems

John and Zari wanted to try something new in their relationship, but they were interrupted because Les-Lay sent Zari a message about the death of DJ S'More Money, and they found out that something happened. He and Zari arrived at the Waverider and are informed about an alien that murdered S´More Money in 2045, and they traveled to 2045 to investigate the situation earlier. Upon arrival, John would see how Zari regains his fame, and they arrive at a restaurant to eat and John reveals that he is Zari's boyfriend and there John would meet S´More Money and John used a spell to set fire to the mask of S´More Money and John and Zari would laugh at him. After Zari gave his show in Da Throne, John, Behrad and Nate would require Zari to have more fans in order to beat Lord Knoxicrillion and use John as the great sorcerer boyfriend and Nate, Behrad and Les-Lay took John away to change his look and John heard Zari talk to his mother that her relationship with John would not last long and John was saddened to hear what Zari said. John and Zari would be interviewed about their relationship and the infuriated by all the fame said that this is over and argued with Zari that she only does this for the fame, and they break up their relationship.

After rejecting the temptation to cheat on Zari with Les-Lay, John met up with Nate and Behrad and they found out that S'More Money cheated on Knoxicrillion to use Zari's song and will win and they got angry so John decided to save his beloved. John used his guitar and sang alongside Zari and they got back together and won the Da Throne. Upon returning to the ship, John and Zari forgave each other and went to their room to further their relationship.[57] John would later drink a flask before having sex with Zari and would not pay attention to Astra again.[55]

Losing his magic
John Constantine stuck in painting

John tries to talk to Astra.

Upon returning home, John found Astra talking to Aleister Crowley, and he was angry with Astra, and they began to argue because these days he never paid attention to Astra, and she angrily changed the bodies of John and Crowley and John was trapped in the painting while Crowley was in his body. John kept warning Astra that Crowley was dangerous and tried to apologize, but Astra was very angry with him and Crowley interrupted the conversation and spoke with John, telling him that he and Astra would find the Fountain of Imperium and John was sick of the theories about that. Crowley's Fountain. Crowley locked John in the attic, so he wouldn't continue to bother.

After Crowley turned everything into a cartoon, Astra ended up locked in the attic and there John was still in the painting and it was a cartoon too and John told Astra to use her mother's book since the book had a song to take away magic from him. the power to a person if he becomes insane and weaken him and Natalie believed it in case one day he went crazy and Astra learned to sing fast and John told her that it is typical of a Disney princess. John saw Astra sing and beat Crowley by returning everything to normal and John returned to his body and gave Zari a happy kiss, and they told Robert Truss to leave. John locked Crowley back in the attic so he wouldn't talk about the Fountain anymore and he apologized to Astra for everything that happened and John promised Astra to teach her magic and he was left thinking that he is losing his magic due to Astra's spell.[55]

Legends in Bishop's Gambit

John and the Legends ask Astra for help.

John started having headaches after the Legends moved in, and he was cheered up by Zari to give him a big breakfast. He would still be frustrated after Astra placed a madhouse in the house and learned of the Legends' mission about Amelia Earhart. John convinced the team to help Astra to read Amelia's mind. At one point John gave half his powers to Astra to become more powerful and they locked Amelia to read minds and they saw that Amelia and Astra were suffering and wanted to break the bond and locked Amelia turned into Zaguron in the laboratory. John and Astra lied to Zari about what was going on.[58]

Reunion with Sara
The Legends celebrate the engagement

John and the Legends celebrate Sara's proposal to Ava.

After learning that Sara died, John and the others went into depression, but the one who suffered the most was Ava, and they secretly discovered that Behrad plans to prevent Sara from being kidnapped and John and the others except Ava go to 1977 and found Behrad, and They decide to help him to save Sara. John and Zari tried to convince Sara to propose to Ava and Zari realized that John was acting strange, so he finally told her the truth about his loss of magic and saving Sara would be his only hope.

The Legends were discovered by Ava of the past, and they lied to her to continue at the party, and they met Nate from the Future where they knew that Sara would still be dead, but Behrad did not believe her and left to save her. John and the others made a doll just like Sara to fool the aliens, but there would be no success, and they were informed by Behrad that it was all for nothing and sad they left the bar because they failed and unexpectedly met Sara, Mick, Gary and Ava, and they celebrated that Sara was still alive and celebrate Sara and Ava getting married.[59]

Searching for the Fountain of Imperium

Desperate, John asked Gary for help as he is an alien and can help him find the Fountain of Imperium, but Gary had no knowledge of his whereabouts. John kept asking Gary about the Fountain, but they were interrupted by the team, who needed his help on the mission. When he went to the bar, John and the Legends realized that Sara had powers. When hiding in the bar to avoid the Haverack, John argued with Gary to discover that Gary was lying to him about the Fountain, since Gary cared about him.[60]

Constantine talks to the captain

Constantine pretends to be a father.

John spoke with Crowley to receive information on how to find the Fountain. John received a visit from Noelle, who offered him a vial of magic so that he could temporarily recover it, but he did not accept. After recruiting Spooner on his mission, she and John traveled to Spain in 1939 to find the Fountain. During their adventure, John and Spooner met a boy named Fernando. John and Spooner met "El Gato", who told them about the Fountain, but were interrupted by Captain Noriega, who demanded to know the location of the Fountain. John managed to escape and return to the bar pretending to be a father to deceive Noriega.

Fountain of Imperium

John finds the Fountain of Imperium.

After rescuing Fernando and Spooner, John and them escaped to find the Fountain. John, Spooner, and Fernando managed to locate the Fountain of Imperium in a cave and tried to use it, but their attempts were unsuccessful. Seeing Noriega approaching, John stayed at the Fountain while Spooner and Fernando fled. John decided to use the vial Noelle gave him and temporarily regain his magic by defeating Noriega and his soldiers, killing each one.

Saying goodbye to Fernando and El Gato, John and Spooner returned to the present. John erased Spooner's memory so he won't remember the pact he made with Noelle. John welcomed Noelle back, and he accepted the vials, so he could have magic and John gave Noelle Crowley's painting as payment.[61]

Out of control

Upon returning to the ship, John felt invincible with his magic and tried to help Behrad bake cakes. With the help of Behrad, John tried to cast a spell to locate Earth, but accidentally damaged the ship. Constantine, Behrad, Ava, and Gary supported the Legends in winning a bowling game against the Pin Killers. Later, John and the others joined Sara, Astra, Spooner, and Mick at Galaxy Lanes to celebrate the victory.[62]

The Legends prepare to play Beast Slayers

John and the Legends play Beast/Slayers.

After being stranded, John and the others played Beast/Slayers, but as the game got boring, he decided to use his magic to make the game real. John and the others tried to find the Beast, who was the killer in the game. John encountered the Beast, who turned out to be a manifestation of his inner darkness thanks to the magic potion. John tried to face him but could not so Zari managed to defeat the Beast, thus ending the game. John tried to pour away the potion, but due to his addiction, he was unable to do so.[63]

Constantine tries to overcome his addiction

John tries to give up magic.

John was still obsessed with taking the potions until Zari realized it. Realizing that Zari stole her potions, Constantine followed her angrily and had to decide between magic or her. John stayed at his house and was still haunted by magic until Zari talked to him, managing to convince him to give up magic, and John finally decided to get rid of the potions. Prepared, John left the magic forever until his evil version faced him to force him to take the last potion, even though he did not want to, but to survive John finally took the last potion recovering more magic and agreed to work with Bishop.[64]

Alliance with Bishop and death

Mushrooms

John and Bishop in Texas.

John made an illusion to trick Zari and the team into escaping on the Waverider with Bishop. John and Bishop made a plan to find the Fountain of Imperium when it was operating in 1925, Texas. They both searched for mushrooms for Bishop's plan and Constantine met a young Spooner, who took him to his mother's house, where he met Astra and Spooner. Constantine used a spell to make Spooner know the truth of her past, when she was actually carried by the Fountain into the future.

John returned to the ship, where he was confronted by Astra, who tried to convince him to return to good, but John rejected her as he chose magic. John confronted Astra, but she was no match for him, and watched as the Source brought Spooner to the present. John and Bishop contemplated the Fountain of Imperium, but John began to die because the Fountain saw impurity in humans, and he was betrayed by Bishop. Constantine began to be destroyed by the Fountain, who was starting to leave, but John got to see Astra, Zari, and Nate for the last time. He apologized to everyone for what happened and eventually died.[65]

Resurrection and leaving the Legends

Constantine is reunited with Sara

Constantine talks to Sara.

John transformed from a spirit into a mushroom and convinced Sara to eat the mushroom to talk to her. John spoke to Sara with joy and said, "available". Constantine told Sara that if they managed to show the Fountain the power of humans, it would possibly help them end Bishop. John revealed to Sara that he must continue so that the Fountain and Spooner could continue to live. John said goodbye to Sara, so she can learn the meaning of life.

Zari breaks up with John

John breaks up with Zari.

John ended up in Hell, but gave his soul token to a demon to resurrect. John visited Zari, who was upset by what happened, but he managed to calm her down and explain how he revived. Now though, John had to embark on a new path without the Legends and decided to break up with Zari, ending their relationship. John handed Zari a key,[66] which led to a pocket dimension in Hell just like his home.[67] John said goodbye to Zari and wished her luck for what she will find before using a time stone to return to 2021.[66]

Erased Reverse-Flashpoint timeline

John Constantine gave Frost and Mark Blaine a protection spell to grant them immunity against Damien Darhk's black magic.[68]

Personality

"I'm John Constantine, and I am devious to the core."
—John Constantine[src]

Having witnessed the horrors of the world, John is very cynical and seemingly unconcerned with the value of human life, often deflecting his real feelings with sarcastic jokes even towards the possibility of his own death. Due to the number of people who have died around him John prefers to work alone and anyone he does work with, he avoids attachment so he won't be as hurt if they get killed. He is also known for having a very dry sense of humor.

John is noted for being brutally honest with individuals, even angels and never being shy of expressing his attraction to individuals he encounters. It has been seen a few times, that he openly expresses an attraction to Zed Martin, after meeting Team Arrow he openly refers to all the female members of the team, such as Laurel Lance, Felicity Smoak and Thea Queen, as "pretty girls", and even openly flirted with Leo Snart.

Despite John's bleak view of the world and cynicism, he is a very honorable man as he is always there for the few friends he has, helping Chas to retrieve his daughter from Felix Faust and helping Oliver Queen to restore Sara Lance's soul, he also did a protection spell on Oliver despite his refusal to have attachments to individuals when he saw Oliver had a pure heart. He also has a strong capability for regret and remorse, as he was so overwhelmed with guilt after Astra was damned to Hell that he placed himself in Ravenscar Psychiatric Facility for the Mentally Deranged and seems to express some kindness to those who suffered because of him, as he was shown to be trying considerably to make amends with Anne Marie Flynn when they reunited as he knew of the pain he inflicted on her and the anger she felt for him.

John tends to be a pessimistic realist as when Oliver thanked him for bringing Sara back he simply told Oliver he owed him only for Oliver to rebuttal that instead of that, they should always have each other's back when the need is, not as business acquaintances, but as friends.

However, John is arrogant and overconfident in his bluffing, to the point of having questionable morals, such as when he threatened the life of an innocent child, Diego, to get Lamashtu (one of Eve's sisters) to reveal why she was working for the La Brujeria, which forced his ex-lover, Anne Marie Flynn, to shoot him and leave John to be eaten by an Invunche.

As John's journey to stop the Rising Darkness continued, he appeared to have developed possible genuine romantic feelings for Zed Martin, as observed by Manny, who pointed out that John was jealous upon seeing Jim Corrigan kiss her, since he seemed to be genuinely shocked and upset to see it. He also admitted that due to rarely encountering evil humans, he was troubled by the La Brujeria as they were quite possibly the worst of humanity, which worried him.

John has caused so much pain to those closest to him that if there is ever a chance to end that pain he would accept it in no matter what the consequences are, this is best seen when demons stated they would release Astra from hell should he stop interfering in their plans. Also, when he went back in time to save his boyfriend, Desmond from being sent to hell even though it could cause damage to the timeline.

Powers and abilities

Former powers

"I'm an accomplished warlock, an expert of the occult, and a master of exorcism. I'm also a Taurus, for those of you taking notes."
—John Constantine[src]
John Constantine produces fire from his hands

John produces fire from his hands.

  • Magic: While referring to himself as merely an "occasional dabbler" after his failed exorcism, John is a master of the occult and mystic arts. Since his teenage years, John has accumulated vast knowledge and skill of magic, mysticism, and the supernatural. He is well-versed in various forms of sorcery, including dark magic. John knows words and phrases of multiple ancient languages, such as Latin, which he will usually chant while performing certain rituals or incantations. Many incantations give him the ability to affect physical forces, such as the inner workings of mechanisms, and the movements of others, allowing him to move objects and control their motion and momentum with the proper incantation. Despite John being a master sorcerer in his own right, he is shown to be wary of fighting Damien Darhk, though during their encounter, he was able to counter Darhk’s powers with his own; indicating John’s powers have gotten much stronger. This is further evidenced by how John easily overpowered the demon Neron who was one of the most powerful demons in Hell. However, due to Astra Logue using her mother, Natalie Logue's cleansing spell; John has lost all of these powers.[55].
    • Binding: John is able to use his magic to bind people in magic.[33]
    • Cloaking spell: John recognized and dispelled this magic at Felix Faust's hideout.[10]
    • Dark magic: John is known to be highly skilled in the Dark Arts, having studied black magic lore while still young. His knowledge of the Dark Arts is often used to dispel dark magic spells, with him even knowing on how to call upon God's magic power to dispel even Satan's dark magic spells, as he did to banish an acetate containing the Devil's voice to Hell.
      • Banishment: John is capable of banishing demonic and supernatural creatures to Hell through the use of various spells, as well as by opening portals to Hell.
      • Phobikinesis: With help from Neron, Constantine is now able to channel fear to power his dark magic to the point he can open a portal to Hell that people can now come back from; previously, he'd only been able to open portals that could send people to hell, but not get through from the other side.[36]
      • Necromancy: John mentioned that he mastered necromancy during his teenage years. With the help of Papa Midnite, he was able to allow the spirits of the dead to move on to the afterlife. John is also capable of restoring a person's lost soul back into their body. He was able to restore Sara Lance's soul and mentioned he had restored a person's soul once before. He also performed a ritual to temporarily reanimate and speak with the dead at the Chicago morgue using the Hand of Glory artifact.[8][12]
      • Corpse reanimation: When John Constantine was under attack from Brother Voodoo he reanimated a corpse to trick Brother Voodoo.
      • Summoning: John can summon various entities, and even control them. He has summoned demons to fight other demons for him, and once summoned a demon into his body to protect himself from a Invunche.
    • Duplicity spell: John used this spell to cover the location of Jasper Winters' millhouse.[10]
    • Exorcism: John can exorcize spirits that are demonic or ghostly in origin from their hosts by chanting incantations. Exorcism is one of John's most prominent abilities, most commonly used to expel demons from their hosts, like Neron.

John also performed a ritual that transported himself, Oliver Queen, and Laurel Lance to the spirit world, to rescue the trapped soul of Sara Lance.[17] He later used this technique to help Ava Sharpe and Gary Green to locate Sara Lance across time and space, and gaze into the spirit world of Mallus.[3] He can also open a portal to Hell. He's traveled to Earth-666.
    • Illusion inducement: Using an ancient Mayan incantation, John was able to create a visual effect of the disaster that took place when a little girl was possessed by a spirit. John was also able to create an illusion of the RV he and the Legends were in in order to trick Hank Heywood. During the Anti-Monitor Crisis, he created an illusion of a map of all the other earths in the multiverse.
    • Transmutation: When Neron was going to cut Ray’s throat, John magically transformed the knife into a feather.
    • Life-force transference: John was able to use a spell that allowed him to transfer a portion of his life-force energy into a child who had been drained of his own.

    • Light magic:
      Love manipulation

John uses love manipulation and channeling it into Tabitha’s magic staff to resurrect Nate.

Although the full extent of his expertise is unknown, John is capable of using light magic and seems to be quite knowledgeable on how to use it, as he was able to give Oliver his magical tattoo from his arm to Oliver's stomach to allow him to channel light magic to fight Darhk. He was proficient enough in light magic to be capable of subduing a demon as powerful as Neron when he was off-guard with ease.
      • Light shield: When fighting Damien Darhk, he was able to completely neutralize a telekinetic dark magic attack from him with a shield of golden light and easily manipulate the light into striking Damien.
      • Amokinesis: With help from the Legends and all the other people John has learned to use love to power his light magic. As such, using the love the Legends had for Nate Heywood, he was able to generate enough magic to bring him back.[38]
    • Magic circles: John uses magic circles that can be used for rituals, as boundaries, or traps for certain creatures, such as when he used a magic circle to trap the powerful demon, Furcifer, so he could banish it back to hell.[5]
    • Protection spells: John taught Chas Chandler the protective Eye of Horus Egyptian symbol technique to protect the apartment belonging to Liv Aberdine[5] John also used a Brittonic spell to give Chas Chandler the ability to resurrect himself from the dead, but only a certain number of times.[10] John also mentioned that he could hide Liv Aberdine from demons with a special spell.
    • Spell negation: John was able to undo a spell that Gary Green had accidentally cast on himself.
    • Aerokinesis: John was able to use his magic to create a wind storm when he was fighting Atropos.
    • Death inducement: John was able to temporarily kill Zari to get pass the zombies.[41]
    • Intangibility: When fighting the encores alongside the Legends, John phased through the floor to avoid getting stabbed.
    • Pyrokinesis: John possesses some power over fire, as shown when he was able to create a small ball of fire from his hand, as well as when ignited his hands with a lighter, and suffered no harmful effects from his hands being engulfed in flames.[5] John was also capable of firing blasts of fire.
      • Heat generation: John was able to use a heating spell on a door to stop the agents from following him and the Legends.[33]
    • Revealing spells: John used a number of revealing spells and dispels.[10][17]
    • Sleep spell: John used this spell to put Zed Martin to sleep.[10]
    • Telekinesis: John once telekinetically closed and locked a door. He also used this power on a manifestation of a League of Assassins member, freezing the individual' motion and suspending them helplessly in mid-air before killing the man with a sword. When he was tied up by the encores, he telekinetically freed himself, and then sent a telekinetic blast at one of them.[8][12]
  • Immortality: After drinking from the Chalice of Dionysus, John became immortal for 24 hours.[41]
  • Scarlet Lady magic: After John failed to get his original magic back, he started drinking this potion that temporarily gave him even stronger and more dangerous magic than the powers he had before. He also gained a serious addiction to to the potion. With his new found powerful magic and his dangerously strong addiction to it, he temporarily gained a darker side. Following his resurrection, John no longer uses this potion and has lost the magic that he got from it.
    • Bioluminescence: John's eyes change color to glow blue when he uses his new powers.

  • Multilingualism: Aside from English, his mother tongue, John can perform spells in Italian, Assyrian, and Hebrew so it can be presumed he knows the languages fluently. It may also be presumed he knows Arabic and Sanskrit, due to being able to read text written in these languages. It has also been revealed by Chas Chandler that John is capable of performing exorcism rituals in 50 languages.
  • Skilled guitarist: From spending years in a punk band, John is an exceptional guitarist; as shown by his guitar performance alongside Zari Tarazi’s singing.
  • Expert hand-to-hand combatant: John possesses some proficiency in fighting, occasionally resorting to physical fighting when he can't use a spell. He was able to knock out two opponents, both strong miners,[1] and he later landed a hit on Papa Midnite after a failed summoning.[16] He later fended off ghouls while Zed Martin reclaimed Imogen's angel feather from Zachary, improvising a nearby piece of plywood as a striking weapon, which continued until he defended Zachary from the residual Ghouls breaking into a church, however he was caught off-guard and was only saved from the restoration of Imogen's wings.[13] He also managed to stab Lamashtu with his switchblade while she was attempting to drown him in a fountain in Mexico City,[9] and later fought off an Invunche even after Anne Marie Flynn put him in a weakened state by shooting him, long enough to let Pazuzu possess him to properly fight off the Invunche. In a Mexican prison, he fought off the leading brother of Santa Muerte, despite the latter wielding a knife.[2] When Manny placed a bounty on John's head, he fought off a "voodoo zombie" controlled by Papa Midnite, but he was no match and had to be saved by a gun-toting Jim Corrigan. He later retaliated against Midnite when he snuck up behind him and knocked him down with a series of punches and knocked him out with two hits from the stock of the Ace of Winchester.[19] Years before, he warned Oliver Queen that he has "a hell of a right hook".[12] John was also able to block an attack from Jack The Ripper and knock him out with a single punch. Analyzing all of Constantine's fights, it can be said that Constantine's fighting style is Bare-Knuckle Boxing.
    • Skilled swordsman: During a spiritual adventure to save Sara Lance's soul, John demonstrated a degree of swordsmanship, able to hold his own against a manifestation of a member of the League of Assassins. However, he was quickly pressured enough that he had to resort to magic to defeat his opponent. He was also able to fight against his ancestor, Konstentyn, and ended the fight in a few moments before slicing off his hand.

Weaknesses

"It's, uh...something's wrong. This has, uh—this has never happened before. With all the antimatter in the system...I've lost my magical mojo."
—John Constantine explains to Mia Queen, Barry Allen and Sara Lance why his spell to retrieve Oliver Queen's soul isn't working.[src]
  • Antimatter: After the ritual to retrieve Oliver's soul failed, Constantine revealed that antimatter can block the effects of his magic.[39]
  • Lung cancer: After Astra used his soul coin to turn his burgeoning lung cancer up to 10, it caused him to collapse to the floor in a fit, coughing up blood. In other words, Constantine was suddenly dying. After making a deal with Astra, Constantine's lung cancer disappeared, though that didn't mean it wouldn't come back within that 10-year period.[45] Upon hearing this, he has quitted smoking.
  • Natalie Logue's cleansing spell: Due to the nature of this spell, John's powers have been reduced and now has to relearn everything he already knew.[55]
  • Damned soul: Due to accidentally sending Astra to Hell, John lost the "deed for his soul", which basically means he no longer owned it. Thus, he was unable to use magic that requires using his soul. Also, due to his soul being in demonic ownership, he was to go to Hell after death. However, after Astra gave him his soul token, this was no longer an issue.[41] However, he has since traded it to a demon in order to be resurrected, meaning he is damned once more.[66]

Trivia

  • Constantine's lifespan was stated to only reach 2030. He was meant to die of lung cancer,[7] but has since given up smoking.[47] However, according to Astra, the cancer's already in his lungs,[45] so quitting smoking won't keep him from dying.
  • He is bisexual as he was a lover with Sara Lance and Desmond although Desmond broke up with him.
  • Constantine genuinely tries to avoid people he owes a debt to, having apparently earned at least a punch to the face for the last time he met said people.
  • He's literally made a deal with the devil, specifically Earth-666's Lucifer Morningstar.[15]
  • Constantine takes work where he can get it, so he will even perform a ritual to ensure a marriage if the customer pays him.[3]
  • He won his apartment in a duel, which according to Constantine is "perfectly legal".[3]
  • He is not fond of Doctor Who.[3]
  • Constantine is a fan of Sting, even stating that "in the hands of a master, a lute is a formidable weapon. Just look at Sting."[30]
    • This is possibly a reference to how Sting was the source of visual inspiration for Constantine's look.
  • At 5'11", Constantine is the shortest male Legend (current or former), tied with Jefferson Jackson, Carter Hall, Scythian Torvil, and Rip Hunter. The next shortest is Nate Heywood at 6 feet.
  • His motto is "relax and the work just flows".
  • Charlie's nickname for him is "John-O", while Mick Rory calls him "Trench Coat", "Weasel" and, rarely, "Englishman".
  • Constantine can flawlessly impersonate an American accent.[30]
  • He does not own a cell phone.[3]
  • Constantine has a LinkedIn profile[69] that was shared by the official Constantine Twitter account.[70]
  • He is of Northern-Irish descent through his mother and English descent through his father.
  • His favorite among the Triumvirate of Hell is Beelzebub.
  • Unlike the source material where his name is pronounced "Constan-tine" (rhymes with wine), this iteration goes by "Constan-teen".
  • John also knows that Barry Allen is the Flash and nicknames him "Speedy".

Behind the scenes

  • In the DC Comics continuity, John Constantine is a famous warlock, sorcerer and investigator of magic, first appearing as a supporting character in "Swamp Thing" and later on as the star of his own book "Hellblazer".
  • During the early development of the Dark Universe film, Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro expressed interest in casting Matt Ryan as John Constantine in the DC Extended Universe (despite the fact that the DCEU and Arrowverse were separate multiverses), saying that he was in talks with Warner Bros. to make the Constantine TV series canonical with the DCEU (this was reported before Constantine was made canonical with the Arrowverse; it is not known if this would have made the Arrowverse canonical with the DCEU, or whether Constantine's inclusion into the Arrowverse would even have been possible if del Toro's proposal had been accepted).[71] However, Constantine was cancelled before Warner Bros. could give its approval. With del Toro's departure from the project and Doug Liman's arrival on it, it is likely that the idea has been scrapped.[72][73]
