For the eponymous occult detective, see John Constantine. For the animated follow-up, see Constantine (web series).

Constantine is a television series and a modern retelling of the DC Comics series Hellblazer. The series ran for one season of thirteen episodes from October 24, 2014 until February 13, 2015. Actor Matt Ryan played the eponymous lead character, John Constantine. On May 8, 2015, the series was officially cancelled.[1] After the series came to an end, show runner Daniel Cerone released the script to what would've been the fourteenth episode; it's debatable as to whether it is in canon with the rest of the series.[2][3] A web series follow-up, also titled Constantine, will premiere on CW Seed in the 2017-18 season.[4]

Matt Ryan later returned to the role of Constantine in the fourth season of fellow DC Comics-based show Arrow, in the episode "Haunted". It was later announced on January 8th, 2017 that Constantine would be revived on CW Seed as an animated series, with Ryan once again returning to provide the voice for the eponymous character.[5]

This series took place in conjunction with the third season of Arrow and the first season of The Flash.

Synopsis

Based on the wildly popular comic book series Hellblazer from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine specializes in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight — or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv, the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s “second sight” — an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences — is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. Now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.[6]

After John Constantine was confirmed to appear on Arrow, on August 12, 2015, Wendy Mericle confirmed that the character would be the same incarnation from his eponymous show.[9] Prior to the shows universe confirmation, there was one hint implying it's existence in the Arrowverse. In "Angels and Ministers of Grace", a character can be seen looking at an issue of the magazine Science Showcase. This fictional magazine first appeared in Arrow and later returned in The Flash before being seen again in Constantine.
